Connecting to a remote windows desktop
From a windows machine use the Remote Desktop Connection program (RDP) or App found in most versions of Windows except for 'Home“ versions. Mac systems will need the Microsoft Remote Desktop app from the App Store to connect to a PC. Linux systems can use Remmina.
Enter the machines remote address
Enter your credentials. It may be in the form of <domain>\<username>.
When done with your session, log off the computer instead of restarting
RDP on Linux using Remmina
From a Linux machine in the CS244 lab. Use the installed Remmina application.
When the program starts you will need to provide the IP address of the remote computer. This was most likely given to you in an email message from support@cs.ndsu.edu. You will also need the user name and password provided in the same email. You may need to add additional Domain information depending if the computer you are connecting to is on a domain network. For CSCI 125 Fall 2017 do not add any domain information.
When done with your session, log off the computer instead of restarting
RDP on Android
There are a number of RDP Apps available for Android devices. The interfaces are not always the best as the touchscreen to mouse button translation is imperfect.
RDP on Apple
There are RDP Apps available for iOS devices. We do not support apple devices so can not provide guidance. You are on your own.
Troubleshooting RPD Connection Issues
IMPORTANT
- Repeated failed attempts to a single computer will trigger automatic blocking of the PC you are attempting to for 24 hours. This means that all future attempts from an IP (If at home, any connected to your household router) will continue to fail for 24 hours. If your connection to a lab computer does not work, go ahead and try one or two more machines. DO NOT continue to attempt connections to multiple computers or you can also be blocked for 24 hours. If your computer or IP address has been blocked, we are unable to remove the block, nor can we tell you if it has been blocked. You will need to wait 24 hours to try again.
- If connecting to an ITS managed computer, be sure your NDSU account has been set up for multi-factor authentication (MFA).
